Seven intrepid runners from Belle Vue Racers took on the challenge of running the Snowdonia Marathon on 27th October 2007. This hardest marathon race in Europe, which involves well over 2000 feet of climbing amongst its 26.2 miles, was even more testing this year, due to wind, persistent rain and low cloud. Alison Sedman was more than equal to the elements and came in an excellent third place in a great time of 3:15:59. Steve Bunyan had to overcome some severe bouts of cramp but still managed an admirable time of 3:48:04. This was Steve’s first marathon and he couldn’t have started with a harder test. James Corrigan, Annie Hirsch and Andy Roberts all navigated the course around the 4:19 mark, Dee O’Neill dipped under 5 hours in 4:53 and Kev Egerton stopped the clock in Llanberis at 5:16. With no cheering crowds, television crews, jazz bands and celebrities in sight, runners need to get to finish of this arduous course with a mixture of hard effort, grit and determination and as a consequence the whole party of Belle Vue runners did the club proud.

Thanks to all who helped make the BVR-organised fourth race in the Manchester Parks Series a great success. The unpromising weather did not stop 135 competitors turning out for the senior race, making it the best supported race in the Grand Prix series so far this year. The senior race was won by David Proctor from Rochdale in 24:53, while first lady was our own Carmen Anthony in 27:05. The junior race, run over 3K, was won by Alex Webster from Sale in 10:05.

A furious week of activity for some began on Sunday 1 July with the annual three-and-a-bit lap slog round Platt Fields. The third race of the Parks Grand Prix series, popular legend has it that this race is always run in blistering heat. This year the great British summer gave us a race which began in bright, warm conditions and ended with horizontal rain lashing the boating lake. Congratulations once again to the winning Belle Vue ladies' team of Carmen Anthony, Emma Jones and Alison Sedman, first, second and third women in the race, and also to the winning vets men's team of Nigel Sedman, Phil Omerere and Jon Sargeant. Two days later fourteen Belle Vue runners competed in the tough Rochdale 10K road race, with Alison Sedman taking first prize in the female vet 40 category in 40:26. Finally, traffic, floods, killer hills and extreme tiredness were not enough to stop three Belle Vue runners from taking part in the Offerton 10K the following night at Woodbank Park. Nigel Sedman finished in a very creditable 21st place overall in 40:51, while Alison took the vet 40 women's prize in 41:38. David Furey completed the extremely tough course in 56:56.

Once again the field was dominated by Belle Vue runners, with twenty club members turning out. The flat course saw great runs again by Belle Vue women. First woman home was Carmen Anthony in 18:25, with Emma Jones in second place in 18:56 and Alison Sedman third in 19:32. Full Results

The annual Wilf Richards Cross Country Relays were held in Heaton Park on 3 March, and again there was a good turnout from Belle Vue. On 11 March Nigel Sedman and Carmen made the trip to Morecambe for the Trimpell 20 Mile Race, Nigel posting 2:21:28 and Carmen 2:22:28. Nigel further boosted his pre-London training in the tough Spenborough 20 on 18 March, finishing in 2:32:04 in appalling conditions.

For the first time the popular Trafford 10k race was full well before race day. Husband and wife Chris and Jane Yianni were amongst the Belle Vue Racers that secured a place. Chris started the race in confident mood after some encouraging performances at the Thursday night track sessions. However he suffered badly as a result of a hamstring injury that crept up on him in the latter stages and he had to walk for the majority of the last 2k (the agony). Posting a time of 48mins 13secs Chris was able to cheer home Jane, who running her first race in Belle Vue colours smashed her personal best by almost 4 minutes to post a time of 54mins 51secs (the ecstasy). Dale Chadwick consolidated what has been a series of very good performances in recent months by running an excellent race to finish in 37mins 18secs. This was particularly impressive due to the blustery conditions that saw the runners battling against some strong headwinds. Well done Dale!

Seventeen Belle Vue runners were in action at Helsby for the 26th Shell Four Villages Half Marathon on 21 January. Congratulations to Phil Wood who returned from Belfast to post a great time of 1:16:03 and 22nd place overall. 11 February saw the last race of this season's Manchester Area Cross Country League at Woodbank Park. On the same day Carmen Anthony finished 3rd woman in the very tough Nick Beer 10K Road Race at Llandudno. Well done Carmen, and to Maxine who also made the trip. The following weekend saw the Radcliffe AC 12 Mile Trail Race. Ten runners from Belle Vue competed, the honours going again to Carmen who finished 2nd woman in 1:23:46.

Once again the Hit the Trail race was a great success. The weather was fabulous and encouraged by a great bunch of enthusiastic Belle Vue marshals, nearly 200 runners completed the course and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. Tarus Elly cruised home in first place in 26:50 and Carmen Anthony celebrated her return to Belle Vue colours finishing as first women and posting a great time of 31:15. Holding the race in a public country park has many advantages including lovely scenery, fresh air and no cars but the nature of the location means you cannot fully control who will be using the paths. As a result we had the usual dog walkers, a few bikes and some horses this year but thankfully no runners were impeded. The large puddles on some parts of the course were trickier to negotiate but what do you expect in January and it all adds to the fun! The organisation and the commitment of all the Belle Vue members on the day was duly appreciated by the competitors and we have had some excellent feedback which mainly focused on the friendliness and exuberance of the marshals and the Jaffa cakes that were provided at the finish. We also continue to listen to all feedback received and act on this positively to make the race experience for runners even better. As a consequence next year we will be providing mile markers and including a more detailed map of the starting location in the race packs. Thanks again to everyone who volunteered to help on the day and everyone who supported the race through running. See you all next year! Results here, and compliments on the Runners World Event Forum.

Tom Bedford from the Flora London Marathon has made this mapping tool available for use by partner club members, including us. It's not specifically to do with the London Marathon - you can use it to map any training runs. In Tom's words, the tool 'allows you too map out your favourite runs - complete with distances (miles and kilometres) - using specially detailed maps and satellite images. You can save multiple routes and share them with running friends.' Give it a go, it's very simple and really quite useful. There's a very simple registration process, then just put your own postcode in the box at top right to get started.

The Winter Championship moved towards its conclusion at Wythenshawe Park in race four of the Manchester Cross Country series. Malc said it was the easiest race in the series. Well it was flat. It was also muddy, though not muddy enough to impress Kev. Good Belle Vue turnout again of seven women and nine men. Dale was first home for the men in 39:33, closely followed by Nigel in 40:28, while Alison finished a creditable 17th woman overall in 27:40.
