Phil in action at Congleton

“Phil Silvers” at the Sting in the Tail

The Congleton Half Marathon or “The Sting in the Tail” (named thus due to a nasty climb around the 12 mile mark) on the 9th October 2005 proved to be a successful outing for Belle Vue. The beautiful autumnal weather represented ideal conditions to race through the scenic Cheshire lanes before the onset of the forthcoming cross country season. Phil Wood was rewarded for his excellent time of 1:18:09 with a fabulous 8th place overall. As the race also doubled as the Cheshire Half Marathon Championships Phil’s Cheshire heritage proved to be invaluable as he was rewarded with 2nd place in the Cheshire Championship and the coveted silver medal. Alison Sedman also ran a great race against a strong women’s field and came an excellent 2nd overall in 1:24:53. Jon Sargeant posted another fine personal best in 1:26:01 and Nigel Sedman ran soundly in 1:23:47.

East Manchester ‘City’ 5K Run 25 September 2005

A sunny Sunday morning on the 25th September saw the staging of the inaugural 5K run hosted by East Manchester Harriers. This fast flat course around the perimeter of the City of Manchester Stadium started and finished on Belle Vue’s home track at the Regional Athletics Centre. A good turn out on the day included Chris Yianni and Tony Houghton, who were representing Belle Vue Racers. Cheered on by guest marshals Malcolm and Kevin, Chris and Tony both finished with respectable times just under 20 minutes.

Swinton Half Marathon 25 September 2005

There was a modest Belle Vue turn out for the Swinton Half Marathon. This may have been attributable to the early 8.30am start although there proved to be a fairly decent field of over 300 on the day. Alison Sedman, Jon Sargeant, Ronnie Shea and Nigel Sedman completed the undulating urban course which seems to deceptively have more incline than descent.
Alison ran a great race finishing third overall in 1:26:28 and first lady over 40. Jon carried on his good recent form and carved a massive margin of over 3 minutes from his PB in 1:26:34. Nigel came in at 1:25:57 and Ronnie at 1:38:51 in this well organised and marshalled event.

Belle Vue sweep Grand Prix honours

The Boggart Hole Chase 10K on the 18th September 2005 saw the finale of both the Manchester Parks Grand Prix Series and the Belle Vue Racers Spring & Summer Championship. The grey and drizzly day proved to be fairly ideal conditions for some great times and performances from the 14 Belle Vue runners who were admirably encouraged over the testing course by mens’ captain Malcolm Mooney.
In a well organised and marshalled race the Belle Vue team were lead home by Phil Wood, who although returning from injury still managed to post a terrific time of 36:12 and an overall finishing place of 11th. He was closely followed by 1st Belle Vue women Carmen Anthony who won the female race, was 15th overall and posted a highly impressive time of 36:58. Other notable individual performances that secured prizes included Emma Jones who was 3rd female in 37:16 and Alison Sedman who was 4th female and 1st V35 vet in 38:31. The impressive runs by Carmen, Emma and Alison also ensured that Belle Vue continued their domination of the local female race scene by winning 1st ladies team.
As the Boggart Chase 10K represented the final event of the Manchester Parks Grand Prix Series, overall awards were also presented for the 5 race series. Belle Vue racers featured heavily within the awards with Emma Jones winning senior ladies, Carmen Anthony coming 2nd in senior ladies, Alison Sedman winning females over 35 and Afroditi Kalambouka coming 3rd in females over 35. Not to be outdone, Belle Vue men also registered amongst the prizes as Jon Sargeant’s excellent 38:34 moved him up to 4th place in the male over 40 category and into the prizes.

Great run by Carmen at Langdale

Congratulations to Carmen on finishing second in the Langdale Half Marathon in a time of 01:34:02, a great achievement on what was a very hot day. Now for Snowdon!

Eyam Half Marathon 15 May 2005 - Alison wins

Described as ‘definitely one of the toughest half marathons of the year with spectacular views over five counties’and an ascent of over 1200 feet, Belle Vue were represented by Alison, Nigel and Jon, Alison winning in 1:31:19. The hills were a nightmare, with a steep climb almost immediately, and another bad one between 10 and 12 miles, when the ‘shuffle’ was much in evidence! Great last mile though into the very picturesque village of Eyam, and enjoyed the sunshine watching the rest of the field come in.

Not Phil Wood. Not even Salford.

Salford 10K Road Race 25 March 2005

Twenty Belle Vue members turned out on Good Friday morning for the annual 10K Road Race, which also incorporated a 2K Fun Run. Phil Wood was first home for Belle Vue in a time of 34:51, 31st place overall. First Belle Vue woman was Alison Sedman, also first in the Female 40 category in 38:48.

Belle Vue women win again at Llandudno 13 February 2005

Carmen first, Alison third in Nick Beer 10K. Sunshine was a distant memory to those BVR members who lined up for what must be one of the toughest 10K in the country, without the worst weather in the history of the race. (In fact seeing as I used to live in this part of North Wales, I can honestly say this was one of the worst storms I’ve ever seen here - and that’s saying something!). We all survived, somewhat salt-encrusted and sand-blasted, and despite the best efforts of the sea which kept throwing up boulders on the promenade finish.
